Dartmouth College purchased a telescope in 1846 and installed it in Ira Young's garden in 1848. In 1852 Dr. George C. Shattuck of Boston became interested in improving the facilities of the Department of Natural Philosophy. Designed by Ami B. Young, the building was completed in 1854.
